Usually every collection starts small, in which dimensions it then degenerates, who knows? And every collection wants to be maintained. With LEGO©, if it is intended to be built regularly, for time reasons it is recommended to bring structure into the collection, in order to build and not to search!
(The methods shown here are a recommendation and are to be adapted according to your needs).
With more than 78,000 different individual parts in up to 96 different colors, you should nevertheless require some categories or group colours or make compromises, otherwise the required space need for all containers is enormous. For example, we divide into categories as followed:
For the creative "barrier-free" building, a little structure is very comfortable. For all those who are just thinking about or restructuring their existing collection, those who are simply curious or may look for an idea, we have broken down an overview of our collection and its "easy-simple-complex" organization.
- Helpful considerations for sorting:
- - Which containers? Where and how to store?
- - How much space is available?
- - How high is my budget?
- - Which bricks, in what amount and colour? Also plan for the future!
- - In which sizes should the bricks be divided?
- - Are there categories to combine?
- - What do I preferably / most often build, which bricks do I need for it?
We use transparent plastic boxes from IKEA©. Advantage, it is available with lid and closure, so the contents are not dusted that severely. The contents can be clearly identified and they are available in different sizes. Here we mainly store Bricks from 2x2 and larger or else parts such as the 2339 Arch, large containers parts or tires and rails. Alternatively, you can also use any other box. Here some examples:
Extremely helpful and almost a MUST are the drawer cabinets Plastic Drawer with and without Rolls from IRIS©.
The Iris© Wide Plastic Drawer are also awesome. Especially large parts, finished constructions, smaller plastic boxes but also the base plates fit in perfectly.
For the small parts, especially those that are used frequently, from all the offers the small shutters Akro-Mils Drawer and the large shutters Akro-Mils Drawer have proven to be optimal for us.
Again, transparent drawers offer insight into the content. The drawers can be further subdivided with dividers. The small distances between the individual drawers and its top lid offer little surface for dust to attack.
Sorting boxes are practical for small parts such as technical axles, connectors, links, lift arms, pins, gears or printed bricks, but also minifigure utensils and weapons. These are available in a wide variety of sizes and designs. We recommend this Storage Organizer Boxes. It's cheap and serves its purpose. As you can see in the picture on the right, we put the sorting boxes in a simple DIY shelf.
In addition to the small parts magazines and the large drawer containers from IRIS©, the Mini Drawer Organizer from Dependable Industries Inc© are available as intermediate sizes. Ideally stackable, we also use them for 1x1 to 1x2 plates, tiles, slopes and above all that various parts of plants.
How you sort your Lego® is entirely up to you. We also provide a graphical overview of our sorting method as a PDF for download.
